Our program actively nurtures and empowers our immigrant students, changing the trajectory of their lives forever.
Education creates a better future for our students. This program exists to empower the potential of immigrant youth by equipping them with the tools they need for a successful future. Before we opened our doors to capture student’s hearts and minds, we saw a bleak picture of isolated youth being lost to gangs, drugs and crime. ELC is here to change that.
OUR WORK
OUR OVERARCHING PROCESS
EDUCATION
EDUCATION IS THE CORNERSTONE OF ECONOMIC STABILITY AND A SACRED LIFE.
One major aspect of the Education Learning Center (ELC) is our integral education programs. We currently operate in Greensboro, North Carolina and focus on empowering immigrant youth and their parents by creating a better future.
Our various programs focus on developing the whole-self of our youth by providing strategic tools that catalyze connection, learning, and growth. These programs intentionally pour into the educational development of our students
ELIMU ADVOCACY
Elimu Advocacy prepares immigrant students for a successful highschool and college career through intentional relationships with the students, their parents, and school counselors
01
TUTORING + MENTORSHIP
-
A main objective out Elimu Advocacy is to enhance our student’s language skills through providing time for non-judgemental, organic conversation.
-
We’ve developed an integrated curriculum that walks our students through reading exercises, dictionary use, mathematics, and strategic learning games.
-
We supply homework support, time for corrections, and extra support for slow learners.
02
PARENT AID
-
Translation Services - providing translation allows parents to fully understand and engage with their child’s progress.
-
Parent + Teacher Conferences - Intentional meetings enables contextual understanding and growth assessment.
-
School Culture Assimilation - We explain to parents in detail the culture of American schools, and what’s expected of their child.
03
COUNSELOR AID
-
We meet with the school counselors of each of our enrolled students. This provides the counselor with context on how to best support the immigrant student for a post-secondary education.
-
We partner with students and counselors to walk through class elective opportunities that align with the child’s future career interests.
ELIMU BRIDGING THE GAP
Elimu Bridging the Gap focuses heavily on tutoring 8-12th grade students while also helping them prepare for college and discover their passions.
01
COLLEGE READINESS
-
COLLEGE TOURS: We take students on college tours once a month to expose them to small, private institutions and large, public institutions. We intentionally expose students to a diverse range of colleges so that they can make informed decisions once it’s time to start applying to schools.
-
COLLEGE APPLICATION ASSISTANCE: In weekly workshops, the students gain insight on the college admissions process, the importance of financial aid, essay-writing, as well as have one-on-one checkpoint sessions with the program director.
-
ACT/SAT PREP: Every year, Bridging the Gap offers a FREE ACT/SAT Prep Academy. Here, the students will learn the importance of the SAT and ACT, familiarize themselves with the structures of each exam, focus on the strategies, and inform them of the scores they need to get accepted into their college/university of their choice.
02
8TH - 12TH GRADE TUTORING
-
We believe that individualized tutoring is essential for students to see exponential growth. We provide homework help along with checking for accuracy and understanding.
03
COMMUNITY SERVICE
-
Our students enrolled in Elimu Bridging the Gap get to complete 10 hours of community service a semester.
-
Students also collectively participate in community service events throughout their new city each semester.
ELIMU LITERACY LAB
We believe every student has the right to learn and thrive. We advocate and serve students who need extra help because of learning disabilities.
We partner with University Education Departments to empower our students who are struggling with a learning disability. This gives attentive aid to our students while exposing education majors to specialized methods of teaching.
SOCIAL + EMOTIONAL
A STUDENT CANNOT HOLISTICALLY THRIVE UNLESS THEIR SOCIAL + EMOTIONAL NEEDS ARE MET.
Education Learning Center (ELC) is an integral education program that has deep roots in social and emotional learning. We are currently operating in Greensboro, North Carolina and focus on empowering immigrant youth and their parents by creating a better future.
Our various social emotional programs focus on developing the whole-self of our youth by providing strategic tools that catalyze connection, learning, and growth. These programs intentionally pour into the hearts and minds of our students. Each program addresses a major needs gap in social development by providing each student with the tools necessary to thrive socially in the United States.
ELIMU ENRICHMENT SUMMER CAMP
Elimu Enrichment Summer Camp (EESC) is an extension of education for our students to make sure that they do not lose the momentum in learning during the summer. This fun-filled week will affirm who they are and inspire them to achieve their goals in life.
01
ARTS + CRAFTS
-
The EESC Arts and Crafts workshop marries creativity and education. We teach that visual arts can be a form of communication and expression.
02
EDUCATIONAL SKILLS
-
Students are engaged in hands-on learning activities that embrace their culture. They will apply their math, reading, and writing, listening, and speaking skills to express who they are, where they came from, and learn about others.
03
CULTURE
-
For many immigrant campers, the U.S. can be a confusing place with its implicit norms and economic inequalities that marginalize and oppress people of color. The workshop will challenge and engage campers, asking them to critically think (draw, write, or speak) about human rights, civic and political rights & our criminal justice/juvenile detention. Fully invested campers will be expected to participate in theme related topic activities, ice breakers, readings, video clips, and deep discussions. These 45-60 minute summer workshops provide young people the opportunity to expand their cultural knowledge about their local community in the U.S. and reference comparisons about their native home.
04
TALENT SHOW
-
In this workshop campers will be able to express themselves with the culture that represents them. Being that all of our campers are immigrants from different countries, they will be able to showcase their culture in terms of dance, song or spoken word.

TESTIMONIAL:
My journey with Elimu started that day and Mrs. Esther provided me all the resources I needed about colleges... I was able to overcome many obstacles I faced regarding college. It was an honor been part of the Elimu program... there is always a strong sense of community in the program and great resources for any student.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT + IMPACT PROGRAM

01
COHESIVE NARRATIVE TRAINING

Students discuss their interests, their community, what power they may have, and their responsibilities to their community.

The project helps the students to develop an understanding of what public work entails, their responsibilities to the community, how many different communities each person belongs to, and how different communities have different needs.
